You know we're fans of Cobras here at Streetside Classics, and if you want one that brings the hardware to match its looks, this Factory Five Cobra roadster will definitely get your heart racing. With a 408 inch stroker motor, a fantastic color combination, and just 1845 shakedown miles, it's a turn-key Cobra for a fraction of the price of building your own.
Admit it, you like this bright red Cobra, don't you? A little different from the usual blue but still flashy as all get-out and sporting a pair of white racing stripes and even a set of yellow and black hash marks on the front fender, it looks fast just sitting still. The Factory Five Cobras are pretty darned nice and someone spent a ton of time and money prepping the new body for paint and then laid down some of the glossiest red urethane we've ever seen. Fit and finish are absolutely first-rate, and if you've priced out the cost of getting your Cobra finished, then you can start to see what a bargain this finished car represents. Check out the alignment of the stripes from panel to panel, and note that they extend under both the hood and trunk lid for a very cool effect. That doesn't just happen by accident. There are also two chrome roll bars, a correct windshield with plexiglass visors, and bumperettes fore and aft to re-create the original look.
Most Cobras get black interiors, but the tan leather in this red snake looks quite inviting and a little less stark. The buckets are correct Cobra-style low-back units with vertical pleating, and the matching carpets help control noise and heat. Someone has thoughtfully added a pair of cup holders in the transmission tunnel, making this a Cobra that's eminently usable on the street, despite the 5-point harnesses for both driver and passenger. Auto Meter Ultra Light gauges keep an eye on the engine's vitals and there's a reproduction wood-rimmed steering wheel to really add to the vintage feel. The aluminum shifter manages a 5-speed Tremec TKO600 transmission and there are matching billet pedals to control weight and simply look cool. The trunk was also upholstered in tan carpeting and the new Optima gel-cell battery lives back there to help with weight distribution.
The engine is a small block 351 Windsor punched out to a big block stomping 408 cubic inches. Balanced and blueprinted internally, it also sports aluminum Edelbrock heads and a matching intake topped by a big 4-barrel carburetor. With 10.5:1 compression, it has a race-car-like cackle but still lives happily on a diet of high-octane pump fuel, and the clever MSD ignition system certainly helps. Ceramic-coated headers and side pipes render the correct Cobra soundtrack, and along with a Cobra dress-up kit, the mechanicals have a very authentic look and sound. Factory Five's round tube chassis is one of the best in the business, with tubular front control arms and a custom independent setup out back with a 9-inch center section for durability. There's a vented, cross-drilled disc brake at each corner, and those 17-inch Halibrand-look wheels are exactly right on a Cobra, with these wearing 255/40/17 front and 315/35/17 rear Goodyear Eagle radials.
