Before the litany of super-trucks like the Ford SVT Lightning or Dodge Ram SRT-10 began prowling our streets in the mid-2000s, which ultimately led to today's Ford Raptor and Ram TRX, two trucks essentially spawned the entire species. The first was the legendary S10-based GMC Syclone, which gets the lion's share of the credit, but the other was this 1990 Chevrolet C1500 454 SS. The 454 SS was the first full-sized pickup truck to get the SS treatment, making it the godfather of muscle trucks.

Produced only from 1990 to 1993, the 454 SS was a limited-edition gem. It was the lightest version of the 1500 lineup, featuring a two-door, short-box, rear-wheel-drive-only configuration. With just 64,804 actual miles, this black beauty is a rare find.

This 454 SS sports its original, eye-catching red interior, with dual captain's chairs and a console. The column shifter gives the cabin a (relatively) spacious feeling. At the same time, power windows, power door locks, cruise control, and air-conditioning make for a pleasant ride whenever you aren't trying to light up its rear tires.

But smoking those big 275/60R-15 Cooper Cobra tires was only a stab of the throttle away thanks to the numbers-matching 454 cubic-inch V-8 sitting under the hood. Originally rated at 230 hp and a massive 385 lb-ft of torque, that power was funneled to only the rear wheels via a TH400 three-speed automatic transmission. Combined with an upgraded front sway bar, quicker steering, and Bilstein shocks from the factory, the 454 SS could rocket from 0-60 mph in less than eight seconds.

This 1990 Chevrolet 1500 454 SS represents the inaugural year for the full-sized muscle truck.
