Description
This low-mileage, highly original 1966 Chevrolet Corvette L72 427 Convertible is a rare find. With only 42,222 miles on the odometer and finished in what is believed to be its original Ermine White paint, this car is special. Period modifications include a blue full-length painted center stripe and the addition of two extra tail lights for a total six, which was a popular customization when these cars were new. Factory optional side-mounted exhaust and knock-off wheels wrapped with BF Goodrich Silvertown Redline tires add to this rare Corvette's allure.
The black interior appears to be original as well, with the exception of correct replacement carpets, modern retro radio and wood steering wheel. The factory telescopic column helps and make this Stingray comfortable to operate. Additionally, this Corvette is optioned with a factory auxiliary removable hardtop, as well as a folding soft convertible top.
Debuting for the 1966 model year, Chevrolet's L72 427 V-8 was a force to be reckoned with. Officially rated at 425 horsepower, its 11.0:1 compression, solid-lifter cam, forged crank, free-flowing rectangular-port cylinder heads, and virtually bulletproof block allowed for a number closer to 450 horsepower, making this one of the most potent engines used by an American automaker in the 1960s. Developed from a series of special Mark IV engines, field-tested by Zora Arkus-Duntov and his team, it was used in Don Yenko's famed Super Camaros and Super Chevelles, and they formed the basis of the GM-built COPO Camaro in 1969. It was especially potent when dropped into the relatively lightweight Corvette.
With 42,222 miles, believed actual, this car is accessorized with a potent, highly-desirable, numbers-matching L72 V-8, as well as numbers-matching Muncie M-21 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission, positraction rear axle, F41 special suspension, vacuum power disc brakes, and upgraded HEI ignition system. A full engine rebuild was performed by County Corvette in Pennsylvania, that included bored .030 over, new pistons, hydraulic roller cam, and a new radiator. Engine bay looks largely authentic and period correct with painted valve covers, Winters aluminum intake, Holley carburetor and correct hose clamps.
