When it comes to the Golden Age of muscle cars, almost no name can instantly open up a floodgate of memories and a rush of adrenaline quite like the mighty Chevelle. This 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 is a triple-black beauty that emanates equal parts style and speed. A straight body, lowered stance, and correct Super Sport badging combine to create a boulevard bruiser or cruiser unlike anything else on the road.

Inside, the supple black imitation leather is dark and inviting. A center console separates a pair of soft bucket seats, while a three-spoke, wood-rimmed, power-assisted steering wheel featuring a Chevrolet logo center cap sits in front of a classic horizontal 120-mph speedometer. A set of auxiliary gauges and a big 7,000-rpm tachometer sit offset under the dashboard. The throwback sliding HVAC controls (complete with air conditioning) remind us how simple driving used to be. Although originally a factory 396 car, under the hood of this Chevelle, we find a transplanted (and bigger) 454 cubic-inch V-8 engine looking right at home with its chrome air cleaner and old-school primer-orange-painted block. An Edelbrock EFI intake manifold feeds this beast, while a set of FlowMaster long-tube headers feeds into a true dual exhaust, giving this old-school muscle car the sound it should have. Power flows from that big block to a 700R4 four-speed manual transmission, before the 12-bolt Posi rear transfers those ponies to the pavement via fifteen-inch Rallye wheels, shod in 215/70R-15 BFGoodrich Radial tires.
