In the history of the autoverse, we have to give the nod to Chrysler for having the ball bearings to actually produce several vehicles that feel as though they are right out of our childhood automotive fantasies. The Dodge Viper came first, followed by the Plymouth Prowler, and finally, a truck like this 2006 Dodge Ram SRT-10. Beginning with a standard-cab, short-bed configuration, the SRT-10 is built on the lightest Ram body possible. While its monstrous hood scoop is non-functional, it still looks cool. Inside, we find a roomy black leather interior, featuring dual power and heated bucket seats with "SRT-10" logos, separated by an expansive center storage console armrest. A padded four-spoke power-assisted steering wheel, complete with thumb controls for cruise control, sits in front of a set of trick white-faced gauges. An 8,000 rpm tachometer and 160 mph speedometer sit front and center of the driver, flanked by a set of auxiliary gauges on either side. The stock HVAC controls remain intact, while the head unit has been upgraded to a touchscreen Pioneer unit that offers AM/FM/AUX and Bluetooth functionality, along with a backup camera. Power locks, windows, and mirrors, combined with air conditioning and cruise control, provide all the modern amenities a powerhouse pickup could hope to have.

Under that big hood, we find a massive aluminum block and heads 8.3-liter naturally-aspirated V-10. Compared to the iron-block Ram of the same year, the SRT variant gets an upgraded intake, cooling system, and engine mounts. From the factory, this modern muscle truck pumped out a ridiculous 500 horsepower and 525 pound-feet of torque. Even more eye-opening than its power output is the fact that all those ponies are funneled through a tried-and-true Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission before heading out to the factory rear end, where a stout 4.56:1 geared rear end waits to transfer power to the pavement via a set of powder-coated black ten-spoke, 22-inch wheels shod in steamroller-sized 305/40R-22 Toyo tires.

Back when it came out, Motor Trend tested this 2006 Dodge Ram SRT-10 and clocked it from 0-60 mph in a scalding 5.0 seconds flat, through the quarter mile in a scant 13.40 seconds, and on to a top speed of 150 mph.
