Description
The 2002 is one of the most celebrated of modern BMWs, and one look at this handsome 1968 BMW 2002 makes it easy to understand why. While the 1500 had been the foundation of BMW's post-war resurgence as a maker of sports saloons par excellence, the 2002 may be considered its ultimate incarnation. The 2002's immediate ancestor was the two-door 1600, which was styled by Giovanni Michelotti, the masterly Italian designer who had collaborated with BMW's Wilhelm Hofmeister on several models during the 1950s. Like the earlier cars, the new 1600 (later 1602) featured unitary construction, all-independent suspension, front disc brakes, and came with a 1,573cc, 85 bhp version of the BMW's dependable and proven, single-overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder M10 engine.
Demands for increased power, not least from the firm's US importer, Max Hoffman, led to the introduction of the 2002 in 1968. BMW's director of product planning, Helmut Werner Bönsch, and Alex von Falkenhausen, the M10's designer, had already had 2-litre engines installed in their personal 1602s, and proposed to BMW that the company should build a production model along similar line. The result was the 2002.
This 2002 is finished in the classic German car color of Silver. The sportiness of this iconic BWW is enhanced with a sunroof, amber Marchal driving lights, deleted front bumper and a chin spoiler. Completing the sporting look is a set of 7-spoke alloy wheels wrapped with Vizzola performance tires. The interior is stock and authentic in appearance with the correct seat and door panel material and steering wheel. The original VDO gauges with 6,500 RPM tachometer inform the driver of the engine's status, and the factory AM/FM radio is still in place.
