Description
The Thunderbird's reputation as a luxury cruiser was cemented when the third-generation T-Bird hit the road in 1961. Long gone were any pretensions about sporty road handling or hints about affordability. The 1963 Ford Thunderbird convertible was a grand touring car with styling and performance to match. By 1963, the last year of the third generation Thunderbird, buyers were fully acclimated to its luxury touches, such as the "Swing Away" steering wheel that rotated out of the way for easy entrance and exit for the driver.
The Thunderbird convertible offered here is one of fewer than 6,000 drop-tops built for 1963. This well-kept example is painted Rangoon Red over a Black interior. This combination works well with its Kelsey-Hayes style chrome wire wheels wrapped in Coker American Classic radial tires and its Sports Roadster tonneau cover. Other features include the new-for-1963 remote outside mirror, seat belts front and rear, and a retro AM/FM radio. The owner of this Thunderbird has spent over $33,000 between 2020 and June 2024 to improve the quality of this car. The work included among many other things, complete rebuilding and upgrading of the power top system, including relays, switches, top motor, and related items to ensure smooth and reliable top operation. A comprehensive list of all the work performed comes with the car.
Powering this rare Bird is a 390 cubic inch V-8 with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor paired to Ford's Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission, which runs super smooth and emits a factory-correct gentle rumble at idle.
