This 1941 Willys convertible coupe undoubtedly caught your eye because you've never seen one before. Willys never made a convertible back in-period, and most of the fiberglass replicas today are 3-window coupes, making this a rather cool find. Don't worry, it's still got big block power, a beefy suspension, gorgeous interior, and yes, a lift-off hardtop, making it a great way to stand out in a sea of Willys horsepower.
As you'd expect, the Willys makes a fine-looking convertible, and this rod features a lot of little tricks that are typical of the breed. The fiberglass bodywork was smoothed and sanded to make a great foundation for the 1970 Plymouth Lemon Twist Yellow paint, which has just a touch of pearl in it to highlight the Willys' generous curves. It's smooth and sleek, with a minimum amount of trim and shaved door handles, but you can't expect them to give up the "electric shaver" grille that practically defines the breed nor the gorgeous teardrop headlights that are gorgeous expressions of Art-Deco design. Finish quality is excellent with nice gaps and a great shine that isn't dragged down by a bunch of graphics. Instead, the body's shape just speaks for itself. Deleted running boards, flush-mounted taillights, and a frenched license plate frame, not to mention the shaved bumpers, give it a sleek, compact look that suits this convertible just fine.
The wonderful tan leather interior doesn't even pretend to be vintage 1941 and instead offers a full complement of modern conveniences. The buckets are supportive and comfortable for spirited driving, the column is a tilt piece with a leather-wrapped wheel, and everything from A/C to power windows to a powerful stereo system is included. The knobs and switches on the custom center console are sleek billet aluminum and you'll need the crib sheet to decode their functions, but that's the point of a hot rod: style for its own sake and you can't argue with how clean it looks. The custom dash has a range of Auto Meter gauges arrayed across its face and I kind of like how they put the tach and speedometer in the center, as if everyone in the car has an interest in them. This is strictly a 2-seater, with a nicely finished package shelf behind the seats and a modest trunk with an electrically-actuated lid in back.
Like most Willys builds, this one relies on big block Chevy power, 468 cubic inches of it, to be exact. It's a 1974 block bored .030 over and cranking out about 400 real-world horsepower. It's a snug fit in the pointed engine bay, but lots of chrome and billet aluminum makes it sparkle from within. An Edelbrock carburetor feeds the machine and custom headers hug the block and dump into a fabricated dual exhaust system. A TH400 3-speed automatic doesn't even blink at these power levels and there's a 9-inch Ford rear end with 3.55s inside for entertaining performance. The front suspension is a Fat Man Fabrications A-arm setup with rack-and-pinion steering and coil-over shocks with the rear supported on trailing arms. The custom frame and all the suspension components were painted gray to contrast with the yellow paint and 4-wheel discs look great behind those gorgeous 15-inch Boyd Coddington wheels. 205/60/15 front and 255/60/15 rear Goodyears keep it off the pavement and offer a slick big-n-little rake.
