Jeeps just don't stay very long in our showroom, and this 1986 Jeep CJ7 dressed in black will probably be the latest to only cast a brief shadow here. It's got all the right hardware and a sinister look, perfect for blasting through your favorite trails and having fun in the sun.

The glossy black paint on this Jeep is pretty darned nice overall, so nice that if you like your stuff so be really shiny you'll be happy, but you'll also be afraid to take it into the mud. That would be a shame, because that's where it really shines, but we'll get to the hardware in a moment. Taking a Jeep apart to paint it is relatively easy, so there's gloss black everywhere you look, and most of the shiny bits that were removed were left off just for effect. There's a tubular bumper with brush guard up front with a matching setup in back, oversized rubber fender flares, and tubular steps that are probably mandatory on a lifted 4x4 like this. A red pinstripe really sets off all that black paint, and you can tell that this one has been in good hands, because the usual trouble spots are in fine condition. New mirrors, a folding windshield (for that true in-your-face feel), and powerful aftermarket headlights and fog lamps up front make it look great even when it's clean.

Jeep interiors work because they're simple, just like the Jeeps themselves. With fresh low-back bucket seats (in black, of course), it's plenty comfortable to hang out here for a few hours. There's also a matching back seat, so you can take a few friends with you, too. The upholstery is a fairly plush-feeling vinyl, so it doesn't have that sticky feeling that the original seat covers got, but it's still hose-it-off easy to maintain. That goes double for the floors, which are covered in spray-on bedliner material that just never wears out. Original gauges are assisted by a white-faced temperature gauge under the dash and you'll dig the pushbutton starting system that's a lot of fun. An AM/FM/CD stereo system keeps you company and plays the music when you're in your favorite remote place, accessible only by pulling the T-handle shifter into low range. There's also a matching black hardtop and steel doors, so it does seal up well enough to drive every day, if that's your thing.

Jeep's durable, torquey 4.2 liter inline-six is a favorite powerplant among 4x4 aficionados, offering a good balance between power and efficiency. With proper gearing, these Jeeps don't actually need a ton of power to do some pretty impressive climbing, but things like the upgraded carburetor and HEI ignition system certainly can't hurt. The engine bay is so clean that it'll be hard to imagine that it's ever been off-roading, and even with the heavy-duty suspension, it's easy to manage with both power steering and power brakes as standard equipment. The suspension offers a modest lift and heavy-duty off-road shocks, as well as urethane bushings all around, so it's ready to play, and the underside is clean enough that you won't have any worries about structural integrity while you're playing rough. Custom wheels were painted to match the rest of the Jeep and carry big Firestone off-road radials.
