NUMBERS MATCHING 318, GREAT COLOR COMBO, 727 TRANS, NICE CRUISING SATELLITE

For those of you who like the full-sized Mopar muscle cars but not the full-sized big block price tag, this 1968 Plymouth Satellite will bring some relief. Offering the same awesome performance look but with a more reasonable 318 cubic inch V8 and an affordable sticker price, it's a fantastic way to get the look and let everyone else think you spent a fortune.

To get the Road Runner look in 1968, you bought a Road Runner because they were cheap and fast. Today, however, they're high-grade collectables and the low-price thing is long over. But this nicely finished 1968 Satellite uses the same sheetmetal and has the same cool performance look for thousands less. The bright red paint shines up beautifully and it certainly doesn't look like its price should be so affordable, but there you have it. The quarters, fenders, and floors are all original to the car, so it's obviously led a good life and when it was repainted, they took extra pains to make sure the details were crisply rendered. The hood has the characteristic Mopar performance bulges that make even the most mundane cars look racy (not that this one's boring by any stretch of the imagination) and with hood pins it definitely looks ...

The hood has the characteristic Mopar performance bulges that make even the most mundane cars look racy (not that this one's boring by any stretch of the imagination) and with hood pins it definitely looks the part of a bare-knuckle street fighter. The grille is simple and low-key and I like the minimal badging used on this car, which allows onlookers to make their own assumptions about what lurks within. Nice chrome bumpers and a recent black vinyl top add some contrast and look to be in great shape.

This Satellite also has the same no-nonsense interior that the Road Runners got, now upholstered in funky black fabric that looks quite period-correct. It's a basic column shift/bench seat car, but that's how the Road Runners were built, too and once you settle in behind the wheel, you'll probably find that the bench is every bit as comfortable. This satellite actually has a full set of factory gauges, which is a nice upgrade, and both the front and rear seats are in excellent condition. The car sticks to the factory recipe in all the important ways, including the entertainment department, because the original Music Master AM radio is still in the center of the dash, vertical knobs and all. There's also a massive trunk which is nicely finished and shows off what a warm climate can do for old sheetmetal.

The engine is the original, matching-numbers 318 cubic inch V8 and before you scoff that it's not a 440-6, remember that this car is affordable fun. And with that in mind, it's plenty entertaining in the lightweight Satellite. With good torque and a great V8 sound, it's great for cruising and casual shows, and when it comes time to fill up the tank, you probably won't miss all those extra cubic inches after all. It looks quite stock with Hemi Orange paint on the top end and a factory air cleaner, and I have to admit that I would prefer this one with power steering to a big block car without. The 904 3-speed automatic is also original to the car and powers an 8.75-inch rear end with easy-cruising 2.76 gears inside (at least according to the fender tag). Traditional Ansen Sprint wheels are brand new and carry 245/60/15 front and 275/60/15 rear BFG radials.

Focus on bang for the buck and this Satellite suddenly becomes a fantastic car to own and drive. Get the big car look without the big car price! Call now!
