PHS DOCS, FULLY RESTORED, #'S MATCHING 400CI, 2 OWNER TEXAS CAR, 4 SPEED
With just two owners and a lifetime in warm, dry Texas, this incredible 1970 Pontiac Trans Am is an A-list piece of muscle that has a very dedicated group of followers. It's also numbers-matching and shows just 100 miles following a frame-up 20-year restoration.
Completed just last year, this is one of those cars that was a true labor of love. The second owner purchased it from the original buyer in 1989 and started a restoration that ensured that nothing was overlooked. The body lived all its life in Texas, so no worries about body rot, and the paint and bodywork are simply fantastic, as you'd expect. Correct Polar white with Lucent Blue stripes were the original Trans Am colors, and they're faithfully reproduced here in 2-stage urethane. The all-new Firebird is a great-looking car, with an aggressive front end and deep chin spoiler that would become a Trans Am look for the remainder of the decade (and even spill over onto Corvette design). The hood scoop is a can't-miss feature on any muscle car, and the ducktail spoiler out back never looked better. There was still a bit of chrome on the Trans Am, and all of it has been polished or re-plated to look new (or better), while correct decals were sourced and installed as soon as the paint was dry.
The interior was treated to the same high-quality work, with reproduction seat covers, new door panels, and correct carpets on the floors, all in proper bright blue. The Trans Am was Pontiac's performance flagship, so they pulled out all the stops and created what would be a long-term look with engine-turned dash fasciae, round instruments, and a European-influenced 3-spoke steering wheel. The gauges have all been restored, the original AM radio is still in the dash, and it doesn't have anything that wasn't there when it left the factory (and we have the build sheet to prove it). Seeing a 4-speed in the center console will make performance fans smile, although an automatic was available in Trans Ams starting this year. The trunk has been correctly restored with a reproduction mat, space-saver spare with inflator bottles, and a complete restored jack assembly.
The Ram Air III 400 cubic inch V8 had performance credentials from the year before and works just fine hauling the sleek second-generation Trans Am around. Fully rebuild and highly detailed, this show-worthy powerplant has the low-end torque that you always imagined, yet a civilized nature that makes it easy to drive around town. Proper Pontiac Turquoise paint on the block, chrome valve covers, and, of course, that dominating hood scoop make the engine bay look spectacular. Mechanically, it's ready to run with just over 100 shake-down miles on the clock. Wherever possible, NOS and accurate reproduction parts were used, so even the little stuff like fasteners and clamps look right. As a full rotisserie restoration, the underside of the car got the same attention as the top, so there's a new exhaust system, clean floors with just a dusting of undercoating, and a heavy-duty 12-bolt rear end out back. The suspension gives it just a bit of a rake that is a little more aggressive than stock, but with original Pontiac Rally II wheels, it has the right look, even with modern 215/65/15 BFG radials.
