Description

MONSTER 2110CC ENGINE, FREEWAY FLYER TRANS, FRONT DISCS, EARLY FENDERS, AWESOME CAL-LOOK BEETLE!

Getting the chance to pull a bona fide automotive icon into your garage is a rare enough opportunity in itself, but when that icon comes equipped with style that provides a callout to the model's storied past, along with a level of drivability that's sure to put a smile on your face, the opportunity becomes even rarer. That's exactly what this 1973 Volkswagen Beetle offers. Wearing a coat of glossy red paint, it's got an awesome pre-'60s vibe via a few modifications that offer a callback to the Beetle's earlier days, including deep-set headlights and the noticeable absence of the turn signal lenses normally mounted on top of the front fenders. A set of Spirit of America polished aluminum 5-spoke wheels adds a nice modern touch.

You'll find some well-chosen modifications inside, leaving the interior with plush, upholstered seats in both front and back that are flanked by matching door panels. Up front, a Grant steering wheel sits on the column, while just behind it, Phantom II AutoMeter gauges keep tabs on your motoring functions. When it comes time for musical accompaniment for your road-bound adventures, there's a Kenwood AM/FM stereo waiting at the center of the dash, with both an auxiliary jack and Sirius XM connectivity to provide your own personal soundtrack.

The 2110cc engine now sitting in the rear engine compartment represents a substantial power upgrade from the unenhanced powerplants of its era. Since its expanded displacement comes from the stock engine that a '73 would have rolled off the assembly line with, it does so without sacrificing authenticity. Fed by a 2-barrel carb and mated with a 4-speed manual transmission that shifts smoothly, it makes for a very pleasant driving experience. The engine idles smoothly and offers nice, smooth acceleration. Front disc brakes offer a level of fade-resistance and stopping ability that really come in handy in everyday driving conditions. And while a certain amount of steering wheel "sawing" has often been seen as part and parcel with classic cars, you'll find no such drawback on this VW, as it tracks straight and steers precisely.
