Prop up the rear engine cover, and we find a date-correct 1600cc dual port horizontally-opposed air-cooled four-cylinder engine which made a pre-emissions SAE-gross 60 hp at 4400 rpm and 82 lb-ft of torque at 3000 rpm. That power was then channeled through a traditional four-speed manual transmission before it worked its way through the VW transaxle and onto the rear wheels.
