Are the last of the Monte Carlos collectable yet? Looking at this handsome 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS, it's hard to argue against it. Still blending fun and luxury in its own unique way, this clean black coupe remains fun to drive and surprisingly economical to own. If you want a low-stress fun car on a budget, there aren't many better choices than this.

The Monte Carlo already had a nasty reputation as a NASCAR stocker, so dressing it in black was natural. The curvy aerodynamic bodywork looks best in dark colors and with the silver strip along the lower rockers, it looks long and sleek. That's 100% original paint, and while it's 15 years old, it still shines up nicely. There are a few swirls from being polished and some chips from use, but nothing that should stop you from proudly motoring around in this big coupe. This one does have the SS Aero Package, which includes the deeper front and rear bumpers, lower side skirts, and a rear spoiler, which make it seem particularly aggressive. There's no chrome to speak of, but we like the details like the subtle black Monte Carlo script, red Bowtie and SS emblems, and the twin chrome exhaust pipes poking out in back. It's also worth noting that the headlights are in excellent shape with no yellow discoloration or cloudiness.

Inside, you got as luxurious an interior as Chevy could conjure in 2003. Black leather buckets were supportive but comfortable for long hauls and virtually everything was standard. A fat leather-wrapped wheel and center console help with the muscle car vibe and aside from some wrinkles on the driver's seat, it's all extremely well preserved. Features include cold A/C, power windows, locks, seats, and mirrors, cruise control, and a tilt steering column. The original Delco AM/FM/CD stereo still sounds great inside the surprisingly quiet interior and even rear seat occupants have a decent amount of room. A sunroof is a desirable option and heavy-duty rubber floor mats protect the factory carpets. There's also a cavernous trunk that includes a space-saver spare under the floor and a cargo net that's probably never been used.

GM's bulletproof reliable 3.8 liter OHV V6 provides 200 horsepower and 225 pounds of torque, enough to make the Monte Carlo feel snappy. You can see the care this car has received over the years by the condition of the engine bay, which is extremely clean. It uses only OEM parts and remains quite stock save for a replacement battery. Yes, it's really crammed in there, but the good news is that the 3.8 was perhaps the most reliable GM powerplant of all time, so you probably won't have to spend much time in there trying to fix anything. A 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive works well with the torquey V6 and the overdrive gear means that the engine just loafs along at highway speeds. Owners reporting more than 30 MPG isn't unusual. The undercarriage is exceptionally clean, more evidence that the car has never seen inclement weather, and it seems to still be sporting its original exhaust system. The suspension is a nice compromise between sport and luxury and 4-wheel disc brakes were standard equipment. Great-looking 5-spoke alloy wheels are virtually unmarked and carry recent 225/60/16 Michelin radials.

With the same owner since 2004, you can easily see that this car was loved. Right now it's affordable fun that stands out a bit, but the day will surely come when this Monte Carlo will show up at car shows and become a fan favorite. Call today!
