When it comes down to tuner Mustangs, no other name stands as tall as Jack Roush. The cars (and engines) bearing his name represent the pinnacle of Blue Oval performance, something demonstrated in excellent form by this 2014 Ford Mustang GT Roush Stage I. It shows just over 23,000 original miles and remains in almost new condition in virtually every way, making it one heck of a bargain compared to just about anything you'd buy today.
If you're going to have the nastiest, fastest Mustang on the block, why not make it noticeable? By 2014, the Roush cars were fully developed, and that included a few body modifications that blend in so well that it's almost impossible to spot them without a stock GT sitting next to it. Up front there's a custom grille and a lower valence with a custom splitter; nothing gaudy, mind you, just functional-looking. Rocker extensions mirror the chin spoiler and a smallish 3-piece spoiler on the deck emphasizes the Mustang's fastback profile. Roush graphics and badges are another reminder that this is no ordinary Mustang, just in case the big wheels and stance didn't tip you off. Of course, with so few miles, this one is almost like new in every way that matters, with a fantastic shine on the paint, beautiful factory panel fit, and very little evidence that it's even been driven in the rain. This is still a car that can make other muscle cars run and hide.
Anchored by a set of grippy leather bucket seats, the interior is a serious place for doing the business of driving fast. Roush took it easy on the upgrades inside because the original stuff was already pretty nice, but you do get the usual Roush badges and signatures, as well as some carbon fiber. You also get upgrades like special white-faced gauges, a trick shifter for the 6-speed manual gearbox, and, of course, a long list of options. The Mustang's features list includes powerful A/C, power seats, windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and a thundering AM/FM/CD/satellite stereo system that's both iPod and Bluetooth compatible, as well as a touchscreen to make it work. The trunk remains like new and includes a heavy-duty rubber mat just to keep things looking clean.
The Stage 1 Roush package didn't need to do much to the Coyote 5.0 liter V8, which cranks out more than 400 horsepower and makes a plateau-like torque curve. But the guy who bought this one new decided that more power was a good idea, so he had the engine upgraded to Stage II specs. Most notably, there's an Edelbrock supercharger, a front-mounted intercooler, and some supporting hardware to make it feel like a stocker. Smooth, tractable, eminently civilized, it also rips through the gears with the force of a starving, er, coyote. The aforementioned 6-speed manual is a joy to shift and with the engine being so strong, the Roush engineers focused on handling, which includes a full Ford track suspension. Up front there is an upgraded sway bar, lower, stiffer springs, and upgraded bushings. In back, it gets a custom upper control arm to manage the Mustang's notorious wheel hop, making for a Mustang that feels far more agile without the harsh ride penalty. Four wheel disc brakes are famously powerful right out of the box, but this car takes them up a notch with 14-inch Baer rotors and Brembo front calipers.
