You've seen how much the market loves the VW Type 2 (AKA, Bus). So when you see the affordable price, you think that all you're doing is buying a solid metal canvas. But as you dig deeper, you find this is a turnkey ready machine that has so much to offer. They don't last long in our showroom. The two-tone minty green and white is the kind of color you'd expect from the factory in the '60s, but it has the telltale shine of a much more modern application. VW would call these station wagons, but the distinctive shape earned these a "breadvan" nickname for how they maximized every inch of the wheelbase. But you can also see how much more distinctive this one is by the attractive metal and wood roof rack. Just ahead of that is a pop up tent feature. These are subtle hints at the substantial investment inside.
The driver gets all the right comforts with a restored tan vinyl bucket seat, large steering wheel, and a gearshift within easy reach. There's even a nice AM/FM/CD stereo for entertainment. But the true luxuries are all behind this. The rear portion has been fitted with a custom wood interior that has a pair of built-in benches that face a collapsible table, there's even space to lie down on the cushioned rear compartment. It has been outfitted so that a standard electrical outlet can be plugged in a provide power to the whole van and it's built-in lighting system. But thanks to the screens on the windows and the screened-in center section, you could just park this in nature to absorb your surroundings without letting the bugs inside. It's an amazing setup that we know has you thinking about how to use it for everything from campgrounds, to the next car show.
The engine is Volkswagen's famous flat-four unit. While you already know how virtually bulletproof that powerplant is, you'll love to know it has also has been rebuilt around 300 miles ago, including the dual carbs. So while this air-cooled wonder still won't win you any drag races, it's great to know it's in the top condition and precious horsepower has not been lost from decades of use. This is linked to the sturdy and versatile four-speed manual transmission, which allows you to get the most out of the motor. It makes for an unbeatable package that provides reliability and fun driving. These early second generation Type 2s are a favorite for many. They retain a similar exterior appearance to the first generation, and still benefit from the improved rear suspension. Add in front disc brakes and the grip of modern Goodyear tires, and this classic Bus makes for a great anytime cruiser.
