Now THIS is how you station wagon. If Chevy had built a Malibu SS wagon, well, it wouldn't have been even half as cool as this 1967 Malibu, which packs a great-running 350 cubic inch V8, a 4-speed, all the creature comforts, and a very stock look. Need some speed but have gear to haul? Say no more, your car is ready.
OK, I'll admit that I have a thing for wagons, but you can't help but love this shoebox-shaped missile. The Malibu's stylish bodywork wears Marina Blue paint better than most and it doesn't seem odd to see big wheels, a lowered stance, and flashy paint on it. It's also beautifully built, a far cry from its affordable daily driver roots, and with finish quality like this, you'll be using it every chance you get. This was probably a really clean car to begin with because all four doors fit well, the tailgate is in great condition, and the body lines are crisp and sharp. Nevertheless, it probably cost a small fortune to whip it into shape and with details like an SS grille up front, those cool inserts on the hood, and the wicked stance, they really gave it a big dose of attitude. Most of the trim remains intact and with lightly tinted windows, it has a hot rod vibe that's insanely appealing.
The black vinyl interior is about fifty times nicer than your folks' wagon from your childhood. Very stock and built with the idea that Chevy COULD have done it this way, it's crisply restored. There are new seat covers on the front and rear benches, original-style door panels, and a correct dash pad. And who doesn't dig the 4-speed shifter sticking out of the transmission tunnel, especially in a wagon! That three-spoke steering wheel should look familiar to anyone who has driven a '60s Chevy performance car, and all the modern conveniences are included: A/C, and an AM/FM/iPod stereo that sounds pretty darned good in the boxy wagon. It hasn't been driven much so it still looks fresh, and the work was so well done that it should look this good for years to come. It's still ready to haul your gear, too, with a neatly carpeted cargo bay that's truly massive by today's standards.
A 350 cubic inch V8 is a great choice, offering a balance of power and economy, and again, the aim was to make it look the way the factory would have done it. That means reproduction decals on the air cleaner, Chevy Orange paint, tower hose clamps, and those pretty finned valve covers from a Corvette. The intake side is handled by a Quadra-Jet 4-barrel carburetor while cast iron manifolds manage the exhaust. Even the A/C uses a correct A6 compressor so the engine bay looks right. The suspension is quite stock, but offers power steering and a big front sway bar to tighten up the handling, although this sucker still glides over the pavement like you remember. A brand new dual exhaust system sounds mellow and quiet at speed, and as I mentioned, the floors suggest a car that has always been someplace warm and dry. The aforementioned 4-speed manual spins a 10-bolt rear end and it rides like a new car thanks to a lot of fresh suspension parts. Gorgeous Torque Thrust style wheels are surrounded by staggered 235/40/18 front and 255/35/20 rear rubber that totally fills the fenders.
