Nobody's going to say this isn't a great-looking Mustang. But under this 2004 40th Anniversary Mustang lies a Stage 3 supercharged heart that's entirely new and delivers a serious dose of big-league horsepower. If walking softly and carrying a big supercharged stick is your thing, this Mustang will more than deliver.

Before we get to the hardware, can we just take a moment to talk about just how pretty this car is? The Anniversary models were special, wearing their own Crimson Red paint with gold stripes that made them stand out from their siblings. A few anniversary badges helped make it seem special, although every Mustang got a set that year. There's a hood scoop up front, but that's about the only thing that suggests there might be massive firepower living underneath. The smoked headlights add a bit of a sinister look, and they work well with the tinted windows so the car looks very sleek indeed. There's no deep chin spoiler, no extra ground effects, and not even a deck lid spoiler to give this one away, and the tasteful approach is quite welcome in a world full of over-dressed late-model Mustangs. The finish remains in good condition and you're going to have to get used to people stopping you on the street and asking you what color it is, because it seems to appeal to almost everyone.

The interior remains pretty stock Mustang equipment, with tan leather buckets and a lengthy list of standard equipment. Those with sharp eyes will quickly spot the additional gauges in the dash, a pair of Auto Meter dials monitoring air:fuel ratios and boost, which are critical in a supercharged application. The rest is in good condition and shows only minor wear, with some light wrinkles on the driver's seat, some wear on the carpets, and maybe a mark on the driver's door panel where someone's elbow might have been resting. However, the overall impression is that this car has been loved and carefully preserved. Everything works, including the A/C and the thumping AM/FM/CD stereo system, and you'll feel at home pretty soon after you climb inside, such is the appeal of the Mustang. There's not much room left in the truck due to that big stereo system's speaker box, but after you hear it, you won't be complaining.

It's still a 4.6 liter V8, but it's based on a Cobra block and filled with a fresh forged crank, new H-beam rods, and forged pistons, so it's built for boost. Fresh 2V heads and custom ground Bullet cams optimize the airflow and it's fed by a polished Vortech supercharger with an Anderson Motorsports 8-rib pulley kit and a front-mounted intercooler. Long-tube headers feed an SLP cat-back exhaust and it's operated by a custom 2-position chip with settings for 93 octane pump gas and E85. The 4R70W transmission was also rebuilt and the fuel system was upgraded to feed the beast. Out back there are 3.73 gears hanging on adjustable upper control arms and the brakes have been upgraded to Cobra 13-inchers. Eibach springs help in the handling department and give it that nasty stance and it sits on gorgeous new FR500 wheels with 245/45/17 front and 315/35/17 rear Mickey Thompson radials.
