The Challenger's return came after a long absence - 15 years went by between its second and third generations, of which this '09 is a member. The nostalgic effects of its looks are evident right away. Whereas other models often appropriate a styling cue or two to pay homage to their predecessors, Dodge ratcheted things up considerably for this reintroduction and went "all-in" on a design that bears an unmistakable resemblance to the first generation Challengers of the early '70s, while adding some modern-day refinements into the mix. There's a lot of style and functionality on display in this black leather interior, which reflects the light usage and good care that this Dodge has received. You won't find any noticeable scuffs or stains over its black surfaces - even the signature pistol grip shifter doesn't show any signs of wear. The front buckets have the deep bolstering you'd want in a performance-oriented car, but also carry plenty of padding for comfort in less inspired driving conditions. The 6.1 liter fuel-injected V8 under the hood is a high-revving, strong performer, yielding 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque to propel this Challenger to 0-60 times under 5 seconds. With so few miles under its belt, the powerplant is just coming into its own and pairs with a 6-speed manual transmission that offers very precise shifting to make this Dodge a very "driver-centric" ride. A 3.92 rear end is in back and with two overdrive gears on hand, this Dodge provides off the line acceleration that will knock you back in your seat while still offering low RPMs at highway speeds. Also due to its light usage, the engine compartment is about as clean as it could be and the contrast between the engine - with its black valve covers and silver manifold - and the bright red walls that surround it is quite a sight. Fully independent suspension in both front and back makes this fairly sizable modern-day muscle car surprisingly nimble, while power ABS disc brakes at all four corners provide stopping power at a level far beyond that of its storied forefathers as it heats up the asphalt on its 20" alloy SRT wheels outfitted with Goodyear tires.
