Description

This 5-window Chevy pickup is the vintage look of the post WWII, early '50s, with a whole lot more fun attached. Some classic trucks are tough, some are quick, and some are updated for modern living...but this one is just about everything.

Chevrolet called this their Advance-Design truck model when it was new, but over 55 years later, and this pickup carries great design lines that screams Americana. The tall doors, alligator hood, and five-bar horizontal stacked grille are all designed to make this look like an industrial giant. Trucks did not come with many options back then, but this one shows it was not created purely for utilitarian duty. The chrome grille was reserved for higher-end models, and a nice touch is that the inner grille panels are painted Waldorf white – an original piece that's often overlooked when these trucks get restored. The wraparound rear cab windows were reserved only for the upper echelon of these pickups. In the back, the real wood truck bed has been updated with new lumber and a modern varnish. The truck has been upgraded with new side mirrors, chrome exhaust tips, and a set of new 15-inch wheels that help show off the lowered stance. These modern touches are a hint on the exterior of all the upgrades underneath the metal.

The interior still has the great chrome and high ceiling cab that makes this truck feel like an instant classic, but once you sit inside, the 1950s begin to melt away. The utilitarian bench seat has been replaced by two leather buckets out of a late-model Chevy truck. The aftermarket steering wheel provides much more chrome than the original, and the leather wrapping is a much more comfortable upgrade from stock. This smaller diameter wheel works well because this truck now has power steering. The wheel is mounted on a modern steering column that upgrades the ignition, turn signals, and selector for the four-speed automatic transmission. The dash panel is a new custom unit that allows for a modern AM/FM/CD/iPod stereo. It is also the mounting point for the air conditioning and heater/defrost unit. The gauges look stock but have been upgraded to Stewart Warner units, and for a very good reason, the speedometer now shows a much higher top speed.

Chevy's original Thriftmaster six-cylinder motor would never cut it in a truck this cool. Instead, this one was upgraded further up the General Motors family tree with a more modern and powerful 350 cubic-inch small-block V8. While this upgrade should be able to provide tire-burning power, this truck was also set up to be a driver. The motor is connected to GM's 700R4 four-speed overdrive transmission and features a 10-bolt rear end. For stopping convenience, the power brakes run to a modern setup with front discs. This package is capped off with Uniroyal Tiger Paw GTS tires that provide a classic look but work with the upgraded suspension to provide modern roadhandling.
