There's something special about a full-sized Pontiac. A mixture of big chrome, intricate bodywork, and an imposing stance made them boulevard kings. So when a 1963 Pontiac Catalina sedan with a strong 389 V8 and a stunning look inside & out is up for grabs, it's time to take notice.
This era where Pontiacs were out to dominate the road with the Wide Track style that made them legendary. You especially see it up front where the grille tapers inward just so the stacked headlights can protrude with an even more attractively imposing face forward. The Silver Mist paint holds close to the 1963 correct colors, but it's a modern respray. The consignor states there was $12k spent on the paintwork about five years ago, and the way this one radiates today reaffirms the feeling of a big investment. So it draws extra attention. This sedan has straight sheetmetal and doors that close with authority. Not only does that give you a quality feel, but it also means you get to really showcase terrific details.
For example, the nice bodywork means the full-length trim appears almost like an unbroken line. And the quality of the chrome really highlights how integral the bumpers are to this car's overall form. It's a terrific classic style, right down to the Fargo dealer tag on the rear.
The odometer is believed to reflect the car's actual mileage, and so that would mean averaging less than 1,300 miles annually. This less use is really seen on the preservation level of interior. So not only is this believed to be highly original, but also exceptionally presented. The maroon package retains a deep color while giving you great details, like the intricate cloth inserts in the seats, bright door trim, a bright white headliner, and a smooth dash. The factory steering wheel even fits into the color theme, and the translucent elements are all part of that great time capsule feeling when individual style was top priority at each automaker. This Catalina loves to keep the vintage vibe, right down to the AM radio in the dash. But because this is a car you'll want to drive in modern times, the real driving music comes from an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo with iPod input hidden under the passenger seat.
Pop the hood and see that great blue block radiating from inside the engine bay. The 389 cubic-inch V8 with dual barrel carburetor is the correct motor for a Catalina like this, and since this is a year-correct block, it may be original to this classic. It certainly looks the part of a factory motor, right down to the markings on the big black air cleaner. More than just look good, this one was maintained to be a driver. That's why you have a newer alternator and there was a new radiator installed in 2020. The three-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt in 2015 to keep this one shifting smooth. Plus, power steering, power brakes, and new tires make this the perfect choice to float down the road on a Sunday drive.
