VERY CLEAN, NICE RED PAINT, SUPER BEETLE, CONVERTIBLE.
Volkswagen updated the perennial Beetle in the early '70s, and the Super Beetle was the result. This 1972 example looks great, and drives superbly thanks to those many upgrades the Super Beetles received.
Finished in popular Beetle Red, when you drive this car, everybody is your friend. Sure, the Beetle was practical, economical, and sturdy, but the undeniable cuteness factor is what made them a success, both then and today. They were also prone to rust, so finding a clean one like this that has lived the majority of its life in the south, is doubly important. Fully restored a few years ago, this one could contend at just about any local show. The body is straight, the paint applied well, and just about every piece of chrome or trip has been replaced. This one still carries the smaller taillights, which many enthusiasts seem to prefer, as well as slender bumpers which are slightly more proportional than the heavy-duty units required in later years. This car is sharp.
The black vinyl interior is classic Beetle, with firm, supportive buckets and trademark textured seating surfaces. The stuff wears like iron, and still looks like new inside this bright red ragtop. Matching door panels continue the simple VW theme, adding map pockets in the doors that are actually quite useful. Charcoal gray carpets offer the correct German square-weave pattern and are nicely bound, showing great attention to detail on the part of the factory. A single gauge is all the Beetle ever offered, combining the speedometer with a small fuel level gauge, and the markings are clear. There's a newer AM/FM/cassette stereo fitted in the dash, but otherwise this one has been a factory-inspired restoration. Overhead, there's also a 3-layer convertible top that stows quickly and easily, and seals up so well that it may rival a closed car in terms of sound and sealing.
With looming emissions regulations on the horizon, even the Beetle was not immune, but for 1972, a carburetor was still standard equipment, and that's how most enthusiasts prefer it. There's still the factory-issued air cleaner which looks big enough for a fire truck, and the proper hot air tubes remain in place. This car was clearly babied as things are very clean and tidy underneath, even in the primary trouble spots that all Beetles must face, and it carries coil-over helper springs on the rear shocks that definitely improve handling when there are four people aboard. Shiny chrome wheels and hubcaps are fitted inside a set of recent 165R15 blackwall radials for a period-perfect look.
