BUICK REGAL WITH TURBO OPTION, 3.8 TURBO, SUNROOF,VERY RARE, VERY FAST!
While the nasty black Grand Nationals are on the tip of the tongue of every casual car show attendee, diehards know that Buick put their famous turbocharged V6 in the Regal Sport Coupe first. The Sport Coupe gave way to the T-Type, and in '87 Buick separated the appearance and performance packages in such a way that you could get an all-black T-Package car with the standard V6, or you could get the turbo motor in a fully loaded pea soup green. Fortunately, the majority of the cars fell in the middle, with awesome turbo power and sporty options. This cool Turbo T is one of those, with buckets and a console inside and bright blue paint on the outside.
Twin black stripes on the hood and deck lid recall the muscle car era, and they let this boxy Regal stand out even more without looking like all the others. While you could get bright trim on a turbo car this one's all blacked out save for the shiny chrome bumpers, so it looks predatory. Door and fender gaps are all straight and tight. Any T Package Regal got the awesome power bulge hood in '87, but only turbo cars got the rear spoiler and coveted "3.8 SFI TURBO" badges. You could order a plain roof or T Tops, or a sunroof like this one here. This is a well done, eye-catching car.
Inside, the original blue bucket seats are in great shape, and a welcome sight over the standard bench setup. The shifter is in the original center console while the steering wheel (shared amongst all of Buick's sporty cars) feels great in your hands. The gauges are the same units from the Grand National, and are "interesting" when you think that this car will run through the traps in the ¼ mile about 15 MPH faster than the speedometer's maximum reading. Aside from the blacked-out trim on the passenger side of the dash, the steering wheel and the bar graph boost gauge, this car is all Buick. These aren't stripped out, lightweight tin cans with horsepower; they're comfortable, quiet and really nice to drive.
Under the hood is Buick's 3.8 liter V6, which by the time the fuel injected turbo Regals came around was a very refined engine that would stay in service for nearly two more decades. You got computer-controlled spark with no distributor, a turbocharger, an intercooler with dedicated fan, mass air flow metering, Hydroboost brakes and more...this was the stuff of science fiction just a few years prior. Take a look around and you're seeing just about what the first owner did at delivery time, aside from the bright blue performance spark plug wires and the black paint on the turbo heat shield. There are new washer fluid and coolant reservoirs in place of the yellowed originals. It's tidy and it runs hard. Underneath it's standard G-body fare, with coil springs all around, disc brakes up front and a full frame. Turbo Buicks got the strongest axle available in the platform, 3.42 gears and a limited slip, dual sway bars and the 2004R overdrive automatic. The original crossflow muffler and undersized exhaust pipes are gone in favor of a Flowmaster system with deal mufflers, and it sounds great and probably makes more power. 17-inch American Racing wheels are a nod to the 70's and are surrounded by 245/45/17 and 265/40/17 Goodyear Eagle tires. They fit the style of the car, and it's never a bad idea to put performance tires on a performance car!
