If you're a stickler for authenticity and enjoy high-end points judging, then this 1968 Chevrolet Camaro RS convertible is a smart investment. It's a genuine RS carrying its matching-numbers 327, national-show-winning paint, and exacting details throughout that make it one of the finest F-bodies in the country. Expensive? Only if you don't care about authenticity.
Starting with a clean, original RS convertible this one was stripped and rebuilt at the molecular level to be a top trophy-getting show piece. The restoration was completed in March 2012 and has already won several high-end awards and is poised to make the jump to the next level. The Cortez Silver paint was expertly applied over laser-straight bodywork, and the DuPont ChromaBase two-stage urethane looks as spectacular as you'd imagine. A correct stripe was added up front along with a chin spoiler, ducktail spoiler, and proper RS taillights and under-bumper back-up lamps. Fit and finish are exceptional-and I mean show-winning exceptional-and no element was overlooked. All the stainless was polished, the chrome was refinished, the RS headlight doors feature all-new hardware and relays, and, well, you can see the results. This car just stands out among the others for reasons you can't quite put your finger on.
The black and white houndstooth interior is also 100% correct for this car and 100% newly restored. The bucket seats look fantastic with their neat-fitting seat covers and shiny medallions on the seatbacks, and you'll note that plastic sheeting on the floors protects the brand-new carpets. New door panels, a fresh dash pad, and fully rebuilt gauges (including a Tic-Toc-Tach) glitter like jewelry behind highly polished lenses. The original radio was rebuilt with AM/FM/iPod capabilities, and the woodgraining is all new, both on the center stack and the console, which includes a horseshoe shifter. A trim-fitting manual convertible top shows zero wrinkles, and it's likely that our photo shoot was the first time it has ever been folded and there's a matching boot. In the trunk, there's a form-fitting mat, correct spare, and complete jack assembly, plus fully functional "salt shakers" at all four corners.
The original LF7 327 was originally topped with a 2-barrel carb, but during the restoration it was upgraded with a date-code-correct intake and freshly rebuilt Quadrajet 4-barrel from Vintage Musclecar. Inside, there's a slightly upgraded cam to give it a lopey idle, but with it's purely for effect, since the car has just 60 test and tune miles on it. Since it is destined for the show field, the engine was carefully assembled, painted, and correct materials and fasteners were used throughout, with the only other deviation from stock being a Pertronix ignition. The original numbers matching powerglide still lives underneath and original 10-bolt with 2.73s inside were also fully rebuilt and detailed and reinstalled in the show-quality chassis. Plain painted steel wheels with reproduction F70-14 redlines are the perfect finishing touch.
You probably couldn't pay someone to build nicer 1968 Camaro convertible, and a project like that will cost more than the asking price on this one. THAT is how a car like this stunning Camaro can be considered a bargain. This is as good as they get. Call today!
