396 CID BIG BLOCK, BEAUTIFUL YELLOW PAINT, 12 BOLT REAR END, TH350 TRANSMISSION
The Chevy Camaro has always delivered big performance on a modest budget, and this 1968 RS/SS 396 continues the tradition. Not an investment-grade garage ornament, but rather a car that's built to be driven and looks awesome while doing it. If showing up in an awesome piece of Chevy muscle is your idea of fun, this is your next car.
The look is quite correct, don't get me wrong. This sucker could probably compete for trophies at the local level, but to be honest, it's probably too good for that. Instead, it's built to drive, provenance be damned. The vivid yellow paint is a few shades brighter than Daytona Yellow, but looks fantastic on the F-body shape. They worked hard to get it into shape, nailing the gaps and prepping the steel to make it look right once everything was said and done. Correct black SS stripes were installed once the paint was dry, and they're the more dramatic late-68 D90 style that cuts back to the door, so this car is sure to stand out in a crowd. It's also got RS equipment like the popular hidden headlights up front and separate back-up lights out back, plus the usual duck tail spoiler on the trunk. As a big block car, the tail panel is properly blacked-out, which works with the overall color combination and nicely installed black vinyl top. Even the brand new chrome bumpers are neatly optioned with oversized bumper guards that look pretty cool here.
Black really is the only color that you'd choose on a Camaro like this, and the buckets wear fresh reproduction seat covers that fit well and remain quite comfortable. The interior, like the bodywork, is pretty stock with a few thoughtful changes that enhance the driving experience. The black carpets are fresh, the door panels are in excellent shape, and there's an aftermarket console with cup holders that almost looks like it was born there. Factory options include a tilt column with wood-rimmed steering wheel and a matching center console, which has been fitted with optional auxiliary gauges. There's also a tick-tock-tach in the dash with a working clock and the shiny gauge faces are in excellent shape. A newer AM/FM/cassette radio slots neatly into the original spot in the center stack and powers Pioneer 6x9 speakers on the rear deck. The trunk is finished with a nice-fitting reproduction mat and carries a handy space-saver spare.
The burly 396 cubic inch V8 under the hood has been rebuilt to L35 325 horsepower specs, and with mountainous torque production, it'll pretty much shred the tires at will. The cowl induction hood is functional, there's correct Chevy Orange paint on the block, and no big block with sporting aspirations is complete without a set of chrome valve covers. All the little stuff is right, too, from the hoses and clamps to the production line stampings on the firewall, and aside from a few signs of use, this is a very correct engine bay. The engine starts with a wonderful big block bark from the twin Flowmaster exhaust system and pulls like a freight train through a TH350 3-speed automatic and 12-bolt rear end. The ride height is stock, so it looks right sitting on factory Rally wheels with staggered BFG tires.
There are inferior Camaros out there for more money, but this one skillfully blends big performance, correct details, and an outstanding look to make one heck of an early F-body. Call today!
