The hot rodding world has finally caught on that 4-door sedans can be both cool AND practical. This 1942 Ford is a rare beast, but nobody will doubt its credentials after they see that wicked stance, oversized wheels, and deep, rich paint. From the inside, you'll have room for the whole family and a look that will attract attention just by being different.
The '42 Fords got a big facelift that would carry them through the early post-war years. The fat fenders and fastback profile seem to lend themselves to customization quite easily, and there's nothing frumpy about this slick 4-door. Most of the trim and the door handles have been shaved, so it looks sleek and fast just sitting still, but the classic shape remains unaltered. PPG Ming Blue paint looks stunning on the vintage sheetmetal, which was smoothed and sanded until it was the perfect canvas to show off the craftsmanship of the guys at Auto Motion who put it all together. A subtle pinstripe adds some interest, along with a billet grille insert, chrome bumpers, LED taillights, and the original stainless trim around the front and rear windows. The car reportedly cost more than $100,000 to build, and one quick glance makes that figure easy to believe.
Trimmed in gorgeous Buckskin ultra-leather, the completely custom interior blends old and new so seamlessly that you'll never look at your modern car the same way again. The original bench seats are still just as comfortable and spacious as they ever were, but are now joined by a quartet of neatly finished door panels and a beautifully crafted headliner. Dakota Digital gauges have been stuffed into the original instrument panel, with A/C controls and vents neatly integrated as well. The usual upgrades are all here, including power windows, keyless entry, a tilt column with a billet wheel, a Lokar shifter, and a powerful AM/FM/CD-changer from Secret Audio. Under that power-actuated rear deck, you'll find a surprisingly spacious trunk, fully upholstered to match the passenger compartment and that includes a full-sized spare, CD changer, and remote-mounted battery.
Sticking to the basics means this car is both reliable and comfortable on the open road. The engine is a 330 horsepower Chevy 350 crate motor, dressed with an Edelbrock 4-barrel and a bunch of chrome. Billet pulleys and bright red plug wires add some flash, too, so this is an engine bay you'll be proud to show off at the local cruise night. It's backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic feeding an 8.8-inch rear end from a Ford Explorer, which also provided the rear disc brakes. A Fat Man Fabrications tubular front suspension with disc brakes and coil-overs handles the steering, and the polished exhaust system with DynoMax mufflers is a work of art all by itself. The chassis is satin black for easy maintenance, and the heavily reinforced frame ensures a smooth ride. The suspension is set up with just the right rake, accentuated by the Billet Specialties Vintec wheels wearing 225/45/18 front and 245/45/20 rear tires.
