Nova SS Yenko Tribute
427 CI V8 TRI POWER, 4-SPEED, HEADERS, PS, PB, A/C, FAST & MEAN YENKO TRIBUTE!!!
Don Yenko did some amazing things, but even he didn't dare to stuff a 427 cubic inch V8 with tri-power into the compact Nova. However, that doesn't mean it can't be done, as this incredible 1971 Yenko S/C tribute demonstrates in spectacular fashion.
You've seen other Yenko tributes here at Streetside Classics, but none-and I mean NONE-were as impressive as this one. They did it right, starting with a base Nova 2-door sedan, not a hardtop, and built it up from there. Stripped and rebuilt at the molecular level, the unusual and arresting Placer Gold paint gives this one a unique look that's neither excessively flashy nor needlessly tame. Instead, it grabs you by virtue of being unusual, then draws you in with expert workmanship and careful attention to getting the finish as nice as it can possibly be. The panels were straightened and aligned with care, and the paint is two-stage urethane so the shine is both spectacular and durable. Correct Yenko decals are simple affairs that work well on the simple Nova shape, and there's no mistaking the big sYc logo on the hood. If you know what this is, you'll know to get out of the way when you see it in your rear-view mirror.
Inside it's pure industrial-strength performance with a bench seat and a Hurst shifter. This Nova was built for combat, not for luxury, but nevertheless, it's quite nicely done with fresh upholstery, new carpets, and door panels that add a bit of warmth to the all-black interior with a strip of faux woodgrain. Yenko decals on the headrests are a nice touch (yes, even the originals were simply decals), and the original instruments are all you get to keep an eye on the thumping big block. No, your eyes aren't deceiving you, either, because it does have A/C that's integrated into the original controls and vents for a very OEM look. There's also an AM/FM radio in the dash, but you won't need it because the 427 sounds downright scary. Even the trunk is neatly finished to stock specs with a fresh mat, spare tire cover, and full-sized spare.
But enough with all that, you really want to know about the engine, right? It's an L71 427 tri-power, correct right down to the triple deuces up top and triangular air cleaner. Dressed the way it might have looked if it were an actual factory creation, it wears Chevy Orange paint, chrome big block valve covers, and even authentic details like stamped hoses and tower hose clamps. It starts quickly and idles like it escaped from an asylum thanks to long-tube headers and a 2.5-inch exhaust system. It's backed by a 4-speed manual that puts the twist to a 10-bolt rear, all sitting on stock suspension bits. It's as clean underneath as it is up top, and the performance is undeniable in such a lightweight car. Painted steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps complete the hardcore performance look and wear reproduction F70-14 Firestone Wide Ovals.
Incredible to drive and just as remarkable to look at, this is perhaps the ultimate dream Nova, a car that could have been, if only the times had been a little different. Your chance is now, call today!
