Fat-fendered Fords like this 1947 Ford coupe make for some great hot rods. With room for a potent V8 under the hood, lots of creature comforts inside, and a cool stance that stands out in a crowd, this cool coupe is a street rod that is polished enough to be a daily driver.
Aside from the shaved front bumper, this handsome Ford looks pretty much the way it did when it rolled off the assembly line seventy years ago. The handsome lines were a pre-war design with a facelifted nose, and you can't argue with the results. Beautiful maroon paint was borrowed from a late-model Ford color pallet and actually works quite well on the vintage shape. There are clearly a lot of hours invested in the bodywork and you can see in our photos how nicely it reflects its surroundings, an effect that only comes from hours of tedious blocking and sanding. In fact, all the chrome and stainless trim was restored before it was reinstalled, so it sparkles against the pretty paint job and even details like the rubber fender guards and rain gutters made the transformation intact. In fact, it seems that only the hood ornament was removed, helping to clean up the sleek front end.
These Fords work so well because they're downright HUGE inside. The wide split bench seat is original-issue and wears handsome cloth upholstery that's vaguely similar to the original pattern, so it has an appropriate '40slook. The beautiful steering wheel was restored and painted to match the bodywork, as was the dash, which is ornately finished with lots of chrome and polished stainless. The original speedometer is still doing its thing, complete with red numbers as original, but the auxiliary gauges have been cleverly upgraded to Auto Meter dials hidden behind the original fascia. There's also a traditional tach strapped to the steering column for the true hot rod experience. The grille in the center of the dash was originally the radio speaker, but the radio's face plate is now the controls for the A/C system which feeds vents neatly installed underneath. The back seat is spacious enough for real-sized adults and the trunk is neatly finished with a reproduction rubber mat.
The Ford offers a lot of comfort and a lot of room, so moving it around is a strong-running 383 cubic inch Chevy small block. With an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and intake up top, a reasonably-sized cam, and a pair of block-hugger headers, it is the ideal choice to power a street rod like this. A few chrome dress-up parts, a smooth firewall, and clean plumbing and wiring make the engine bay look professional and you can't argue with how it works. A TH350 3-speed automatic and a 9-inch Ford rear end are reliable additions to the menu, and while the suspension is still pretty stock, you won't mind how it rides and handles. Tricks like a remote-mounted transmission cooler and modern tube shocks help with reliability and the stance is exactly right. Chrome Torque Thrust wheels look right and carry 215/70/15 front and 255/70/15 rear blackwall radials.
A handsome, powerful car that runs and drives like it should, this Ford lives up to its billing and delivers a great ride at a reasonable price. Call today!
