Chevrolet's first entry into the Pony car wars was the 1964 Chevelle with the Malibu SS package. This car is a beautiful example of one of those in its factory correct color of Daytona Blue. Chevelle would grow up and go on to become a legendary mid-sized muscle car, leaving the Pony segment to another legendary Chevrolet, but here is your chance to own the original contender in a war still being waged today.
This code 916 Daytona Blue is just a nice color. It's bright and airy and just makes you want to get in and go for a ride in it. (Of-course so does the rest of the car too). In this Sport Coupe you can see the styling influences of the Chevy II and a rear fender line that would be echoed again later on the Impala. It's a timeless design that still looks good today. Up front a simple grill with four headlights is underlined by a nice shiny bumper with Chevrolet in script on the hood. Chevelle badges adorn the front fenders along with crossed racing flags and Malibu SS badges grace the rear fenders. At the rear an aluminum trim panel runs between the taillights with a Chevrolet emblem in the center and a small SS badge above it on the right. The car sits nicely on steel ...
The car sits nicely on steel wheels with chrome trim rings and wheel centers.
Open the door and you will find a nicely restored interior that is stylish and comfortable. The door panel has three sections with the ends pleated and a smooth center with a Chevy bowtie emblem. A deep dish 3-spoke steering wheel has a bowtie in the center of the brushed aluminum spokes and is mounted on a tilt column. Behind it is a dash panel that has had considerable time spent on it polishing it up to a chrome like shine. The tach is in front of the driver with the speedo off to the left and engine indicators on the right. There is an AM/FM/Cassette deck for your listening pleasure and a trio of Sunpro gauges are mounted under the center to keep accurate tabs on water temp, oil pressure and voltage. The bucket seats are fresh and comfortable with pleated cloth seating surfaces and smooth vinyl edges. A stick shift for the 4-speed manual transmission is mounted in the floor and is just begging to be stirred around.
Open the hood and you will find a neat and clean engine bay with a nicely warmed over 350 cubic inch engine nestled down inside it. The engine is topped with an Edelbrock setup starting with the chrome air topper sitting on an Edelbrock carburetor and intake manifold. Chrome valve covers look great with Chevrolet embossed into them as well as a red bowtie, and they are complimented by a chrome alternator and fan shroud. Long tube headers wind their way out the bottom to a dual Flowmaster exhaust system that sounds sweet, and an aluminum radiator keeps everything running cool. The rear suspension is a 4-link setup with coil springs and up front, power steering works through control arms and coil springs with a beefy sway bar to help the car handle well. The rubber meets the road through 245/60/R15s in the rear and 205/70R15s in the front mounted on those steel wheels with trim rings.
First year Chevelle in a beautiful color and the first warrior for Chevy in the Pony car wars. This is a collector's item that is comfortable and fun to drive. What are you waiting for? Come on down and check it out!
