This is the car that almost saved Pontiac. It was praised by the press and popular with the public. It's a full-sized sports/luxury car with a Corvette LS2 V8 under the hood, and a 230-watt Blaupunkt stereo under the dash. But the demise of Pontiac was already imminent. So, what we have here is an extremely clean and low mileage car, ordered by a GM employee as they were ceasing production, that sang Pontiacs swan song with style.
White Hot is an appropriate color for this car, because that's what it is. An unassuming white sedan that can outrun quite a few high-line sports cars. The Pontiac emblem in the middle of the split grill is about the last one ever to adorn the front of a car. There are subtle indications of its capabilities on the body here and there. The front facia reaches low to the ground and has a couple fog lights mounted into it. Hood scoops hint at the power nestled beneath the hood and tastefully flared fenders stretch to cover the 18-inch wheels with disc brakes clearly visible behind them. Side skirts keep air out from underneath the car at speed and help reduce aerodynamic drag. There is a lip spoiler on the trunk with a badge announcing that this is a GT ... There is a lip spoiler on the trunk with a badge announcing that this is a GT version of the G8. It also shows that it's a GT with the stainless-steel quad tailpipes peeking out below the bumper.
Open the door and you will find a luxury interior with the best comfort and convenience features. The seats are supportive and comfortable and wrapped up in leather. The speaker you see in the door panel is the first indication you get of the top of the line Blaupunkt sound system in the dash. Its one of 11 speakers that include subwoofers for your listening pleasure. The GT steering wheel is slightly smaller than the regular G8 and is also wrapped in leather. A 180 MPH speedo and tach are visible through the wheel. A 6.5" LCD display for the audio is just off to the right. Below it are controls for the dual zone climate control system. The console has heated seat switches on each side of the traction control button at the front, along with a leather wrapped shift knob for the 6-speed automatic trans. Power locks, windows, and mirror controls are at your finger tips just behind it. This is the way to travel in style!
What makes this GT hot in the Pontiac tradition, is putting the best equipment GM had to offer together in a uniquely Pontiac way. It starts with the 6.0-liter, Corvette based LS2 engine that pumps out 361 Horsepower! That is backed up by a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode that sends the power to the rear wheels. Traction control and stability control work with the limited slip differential and the anti-lock brake system to help put all that power on the ground in a controlled manner. Braking is handled by 4-wheel discs while variable ratio steering provides a nice feel on the road, and easy maneuverability in the parking lot. Independent suspension all around have springs and shocks that were specifically tuned by the factory to provide great handling along with a comfortable ride. The rubber meets the road through 18-inch tires mounted on special wheels with a machined surface and painted insets.
Come on down and check out the car that almost saved Pontiac. It is an all around great car that is likely to become better known and more collectible as people look back at the last days of Pontiac and wonder why, when they could still make cars like this.
