This is a pivotal year for the Road Runner. It's the only time the famous 440 was available with the cool fuselage styling. This new style really went for the sinister side. The full front overhang makes the headlights look like the eyes of a criminal lurking in the darkness, and the blacked out hood and rear huge rear wing makes this Road Runner a bird of prey. This one even came directly from the factory with some of the best details, like the optional hood pins, side strobe stripes, and that big, bad Air Grabber hood that rises up and looks like it wants to consume all the lesser cars as it charges up from behind. But there's also a brighter side to this coupe. The factory-correct Bright Blue Metallic has been resprayed with such care that you can't help but stare at its modern clearcoat shine. In fact, the color looks like it was borrowed from the Warner Brothers cartoon character that's all around the car... and if that idea doesn't delight the car show judges, nothing will!
Open the door, and you'll find one of the best interiors you will ever see on a Road Runner. Where most of these are dark-and-stark budget classics, this car features a seriously attractive blue that coordinates nicely with the exterior paint. And the factory wood appearance paneling really makes sure that this budget Road Runner had quite a premium appearance. The vinyl seats and door panels are looking great, and it keeps plenty of original elements. The bench seats of this big coupe make it a legitimate six-passenger automobile, but it's the driver that's clearly the most important in this Plymouth. You get a three-spoke wheel for the optional power steering, and beyond that are the easy-to-read factory gauges. And the part we know you'll love the best is the iconic pistol-grip shifter.
In 1971 the base V8 for these Road Runner was the 340 cubic-inch unit. That's a great motor, but it was no match for the 440 available for a lucky few machines. So another one of the big improvements to this coupe was a serious upgrade in the engine compartment to the top dog V8. The investment in the restoration really makes this big motor standout, and we all love the Coyote Duster air grabber that sits atop the iconic triple dual carburetor setup. While the displacement and carbs alone makes this the new street king, the restoration went further by adding extra performance goodies such as an Edelbrock intake, as well as a Crane Cams Hi-6 ignition and PS91 coil. The combination of the four-speed manual gearbox and upgraded power means you are in complete control of the enhanced brutish symphony that comes out of the newer stainless dual exhaust.
After 1971, Plymouth shut the door on the legendary 440 six-pack. That makes this stunning Road Runner a great tribute to one of the best icons from the muscle car era.
