WELL DOCUMENTED, BUILD SHEET/MARTI REPORT, TREMEC 5 SPEED, 351CI, REAL MACH 1

This 1972 Mustang has a great look that's an awesome twist on the original. The good news is that this is a real Mach 1, the last of the truly ferocious early Mustangs, and the better news is that it's been artfully upgraded with a deep respect for the original design. No, it's not for everyone, but if you like the way it looks, you're going to LOVE the way it drives.

As I said, this is a real-deal Mach 1 with a correct (and likely matching-numbers) 351 Cobra Jet powerplant, so it's as fast as it looks. The fastback body style certainly helps, and with the ram air hood, chin spoiler, urethane front bumper, and rear wing, it has all the right ingredients. Finish quality is impressive, with plenty of evidence that this has been a well-maintained car all its life and the repaint in vivid, almost fluorescent, orange makes it sizzle. Correct Mach 1 stripes and decals have been reinstalled and the contrasting silver looks far more interesting than garden-variety black or white would have. A few custom details were added, including painting the taillight surrounds to match the body and eliminating many of the original badges and Mustang script emblems, but there's really no way to hide this ...

A few custom details were added, including painting the taillight surrounds to match the body and eliminating many of the original badges and Mustang script emblems, but there's really no way to hide this car's identity; it's pure Mustang through and through.

The black interior is fairly stock Mach 1 fare, with high-back "Sebring knit" buckets and a center console. According to the Marti Report that accompanies the car, this is how it came from the factory, although things like the Auto Meter Ultra Light tach and Hurst shifter are obviously upgrades that happened during the restoration. Correct carpets, reproduction door panels, and even the burled walnut appliques on the dash are all quite faithful to the original design, and it even includes its original AM/FM radio in the dash. Everything is in very good condition and shows few signs of use or age, suggesting that the build is quite fresh and hasn't seen a lot of use. The trunk offers more evidence that this has always been a nice car, with clean sheetmetal inside and a full-sized spare, just in case.

The engine is a correct 351 Cobra Jet V8, which many enthusiasts regard as the final iteration of Ford performance before emissions and insurance regulations killed off the muscle cars. Always known as strong runners, this one seems particularly stout, with a few invisible upgrades that give it an impressive mid-range punch that you'll feel in the seat of your pants. The engine bay is beautifully detailed with matching orange paint on the engine itself and cool finned aluminum valve covers that look great. Quite a bit of effort went into making it look sanitary without being too outrageous, and like the rest of the car, it's a great blend of OEM and custom touches. The original C6 automatic was dumped in favor of a Tremec 5-speed manual transmission that totally transforms the car out on the road, and it retains its original 9-inch rear with 3.25 gears inside. A Flowmaster exhaust system gives it a great voice and 17-inch Torque Thrust wheels bring it into the 21st century without losing track of where it came from.

This is a very cool resto-mod that keeps everything that was great about the Mach 1 and adds just the right upgrades to make it potent today. With restoration photos, receipts, original build sheet, and a Marti Report, it's also a car you can buy with confidence. Call today!
