Remember full-sized two-door SUVs? You know, the ones that practically invented the whole SUV thing? This 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 is the last of the breed, and if you've been paying attention, you've probably already noticed that there aren't many of them left. This one shows just 40,297 original miles and is one of the rare ones that hasn't been abused and left for dead, so don't wait because it won't last long.
The Z71 package gave the sturdy Tahoe an aggressive off-road personality but most of them didn't live their lives that way, including this one. Sure, it looks burly and has an upgraded suspension, but the clean bodywork and smooth, glossy paint says otherwise. It's extremely well preserved and for a 17-year-old truck, it's pretty impressive. The charcoal gray paint looks good no matter how old the truck gets and with the big fender flares and blacked-out trim, it's aggressive without being over-done. Details like the Westin tubular step bars, tow hooks under the front bumper, and Z71 decals on the quarters suggest that it's got the right hardware to be effective in the dirt, but it's so attractive you'll have a hard time getting it muddy. The silver pinstripe adds some contrast and the parking lights up front have been blacked out to add a bit of a custom look. This is a truck that suddenly gets noticed everywhere it goes.
This top-of-the-line Tahoe is a lot more luxurious than you remember, too, thanks to gray leather captain's chairs up front and a giant rear bench. Remember what full-sized used to mean? It's also loaded with every single option you could get, including power windows and locks, an all-new A/C system, cruise control, a tilt steering column, and a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system. The seats are in great shape, every bit as nice as you'd expect with so few miles on the clock, and even the carpets show minimal wear and tear, which is nice for a truck. The leather-wrapped steering wheel gives you a good view of the big analog gauges, all of which function properly. Fold down the back seat and you have pickup truck-like cargo space, but even with the seat up, the carpeted trunk area offers a lot of room.
All Tahoes came with a 5.7 liter Vortec V8, which was just another name for the legendary 350. Bulletproof reliable and making great power and torque in the big Tahoe, it drives superbly. It starts easily thanks to factory fuel injection, and with the addition of a K&N filter assembly, a custom Hypertech program in the ECM, and a Flowmaster muffler, it's a bit peppier than it was originally. The engine bay is very tidy and you can see all the new A/C components up there on top of the engine, and you know that wasn't cheap. It even pulls down decent fuel economy thanks to the 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission. Of course, as a 4x4, you also get a 2-speed transfer case and heavy-duty axles at both ends, and you can shift on the fly using a knob on the dash. The undercarriage is unbelievably clean thanks to a long life down south, and the Z71 skid plates are still in place and still shiny! There are new Rancho off-road shocks at all four corners and those handsome American Racing wheels are fitted with big 285/75/16 Bridgestone off-road radials.
