This is the era when the coupes were big, fast, and brilliant. This 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 is an ideal mixture of luxury and performance, with big block power, and cold blowing air conditioning, wrapped in a vintage body built for cruising.
Today we are lucky if NASCAR racecars mildly resemble our street machines, but in 1964 Ford truly let the stock car series dictate the styling of their Galaxie coupe. The sloping rear roof, special to this year, might have made the car more attractive, but its true purpose was better aerodynamics on the track. It looks amazing when bathed in this updated maroon paint, especially with all the bright chrome. Owning a Galaxie was about showing off Ford's top-of-the line, and that's seen in great brightwork on places like the three strips that run the full length of the car, surrounding the jet-inspired taillights, and outlining the beautiful hardtop roof. But easily its true hallmark is the front grille with horizontal waves of chrome. It was special to 1964 and looks perfect on this one.

Open the door, and this Galaxie is wall-to-wall red to match the exterior. There's no mistaking the premium image on the vinyl bucket seats with chrome backing and chrome trim. In total, it feels like a pristine car preserved from the 60s. The great thing about a hardtop like this is you can look ultra cool when cruising with all the windows down, and thanks to an air conditioning, you can stay ultra cool while doing this on a hot summer day. The A/C mounts under the dash in the same place as the factory unit would, except this has been upgraded to modern R-134a, so servicing it is cheaper and easy. The driver gets a grippy GT steering wheel, and beyond that is the wide gauge cluster with a massive speedometer and a fuel gauge. But as you can tell from the pictures, those are far from the only readouts in this Galaxie. There are auxiliary gauges for power, water, and oil as well as a massive console-mounted tachometer, and they are all clear indicators that there is something special going on under the hood.
The 390 cubic-inch big block motor in this Galaxie is famous for powering performance Fords in everything from GT40s to the made for TV Batmobile. Just in case that wasn't a good enough pedigree, this V8 has also been upgraded with an Edelbrock air cleaner, intake, carburetor, and aluminum valve covers. It lets out a truly intimidating rumble from the dual exhaust, and the power hooks to the ground easily through the Ford 9-inch rear end. But, the idea behind the Galaxie is to provide all this speed in perfect comfort. That's why this coupe has a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission and power steering. This is capped off with larger, more comfortable 15-inch wheels utilizing modern Tiger Paw rubber.
This Galaxie comes with a stack of restoration photos to show how it was transformed into the perfect classic coupe. Best of all, this vintage blue oval has all the right features, but is priced thousands less than you could even pick up a new full-sized Ford.
