Big block Corvettes are always going to be popular, however finding one this clean from the '70s, and one with its original drivetrain still intact is incredibly rare. This 1970 Corvette t-top coupe represents the opportunity to buy a matching-numbers early C3 with lots of charisma, and if history is any indication, there are going to be a lot of guys out there trying to take advantage of this offer.
Covered in a gorgeous coat of its correct factory coded 944 Daytona Yellow, this Sting Ray attracts attention wherever it goes. The bodywork is quite straight, the paint is glossy and deep, and it has the classic look of a Corvette that can be enjoyed, but was never abused. The way the light plays over those gorgeous fenders in an unbroken curve is proof that someone invested a good amount of time getting everything tidy, and the smooth, shiny finish is evidence of excellent care since the restoration was completed. The 454 badging hints to the type of power that is available under your right foot if you choose to unleash it. Bright chrome bumpers add some jewelry, along with the new-for-1970 egg crate grille up front and vents in the front fenders, the aftermarket bullet-shaped taillights give it a more modern look.
Inside, the black interior is pure Corvette, which means it's both luxurious and sporty with enough creature comforts to make it a great long-distance cruiser. Correct door panels and new carpets were fitted at the same time and still look great. This 'Vette originally left the factory highly optioned with power steering, power brakes and even power windows, which are a nice addition to any early Vette. In the center you'll find what appears to be the original AM/FM radio, and the shifter for the TH400 automatic transmission. The cargo area also has been outfitted with soft black carpet that matches the rest of the car, and is ready for all your luggage for the 2015 Hot Rod Power Tour.
In 1970, on the heels of the gas crisis, the largest engine available from the factory for the Corvette was still a 454ci V8, making this the last year for the big block with 390 HP. After this emission regulations strangled the power greatly. This 454 cubic inch V8 in this Vette is this car's original, numbers-matching engine and is a strong runner. It's not quite detailed for show under the hood, but that's the beauty, it's easy to get in and turn the key for just about any trip. The big block looks in fantastic shape and as it should, as it was rebuilt just over 6,000 miles ago. The TH400 automatic transmission is also believed to be original to the car and the underside shows off a lifetime living someplace warm, because even a Corvette chassis can suffer in winter climates. Stopping power comes courtesy of 4-wheel power disc brakes. In front of those brakes you'll find 15" GM Factory Rally Wheels that have been wrapped in fresh BF Goodrich rubber.
