The 1965 Ford Mustang was the weekend getaway car for the everyman. A half-century later, and they have matured into one of the most desirable classics out there. But just like back then, you can still find V8 coupes in great condition at an affordable price. Sound too good to be true? Read on.
There's just something about a Wimbledon White Mustang. The regal name and virginal shine made it popular back then, and the factory-correct paint on this car pops just as nicely in the sunlight as it did the day it left the Dearborn factory doors fifty years ago. But beyond the perfect Mustang hue, this car gets its details right. The trim is complete and brightly shining; the gaps are tight and uniform; and the doors hang correctly and shut with a reassuring 'thunk'. But if all you're interested in is having an aggressive pony car, then you're eyes have been locked on the nice period-correct touches such as the Torq Thrust wheels, chrome exhaust tips, and the red tri-stripe on the rocker panels that hint at the interior.

The factory-correct red interior is a dramatic contrast and a classic combination. Everything from the carpets to the door panels to the buckets seats seems so new that it looks fresh from the kill. The gauges show bright, clear markings and shiny chrome accents, so the dash has surely been restored. We can say the exact same thing for the pristine brightwork on places like the switchgear and the side of the seats. The trunk even has the right plaid rubber mat covering everything including the spare tire. While this proves to be a true 60s classic on the inside, there is one upgrade you'll particularly like. The AM/FM radio with digital tuner makes for much better sound and reception, but its knob-style design doesn't look out of place in this American icon.
Under the hood is the correct 289 cubic-inch Ford V8 that comes on a C-code Mustang like this one. It's been dressed nicely with chrome valve covers, new wiring, and an Edelbrock air cleaner. But more than just looking impressive, this tidy engine bay shows proof that all of the components have been well serviced and maintained. The V8 has enough power to pull off the line with ease and to find an extra grunt when you mash the throttle for passing speeds. But to really understand how great this car is, just take a look at the undercarriage and how solid this pony is. It's amazingly clean and free of scratches, so you know someone spent a lot of money getting this one right. And did you see that new performance H-pipe exhaust? It gives this coupe the kind of roar that the factory never could. But even if this Mustang is ready to go from our showroom straight to the car show, we'd also understand if you would want to get it dirty on the backroads. With features like the three-speed automatic transmission and power steering, this Mustang begs for the long way home.
This is the year, color, and condition of the Mustang you've always wanted. But as it turns out, your fantasy Ford is at a very obtainable price.
