The undisputed king of go-anywhere survivability has to be the Jeep CJ7, and with upgrades like those on this awesome 1985 Renegade there's virtually no mud you can't grind through, no stream you can't ford, and no rock you can't climb.
The Renegade was the top-of-the-line CJ, a package that gave the utilitarian Jeep a look-at-me makeover that's probably the off-road equivalent of the Trans Am screaming chicken hood decal. And finished in black, it looks as rough and rugged as John Wayne in a gun belt. Hailing from the warm, dry southern US, none of the usual rust issues are a factor here, with solid sheetmetal even above the rear wheels and in the tailgate. The fresh black paint is quite good, the decals are accurately reproduced so it's hard not to get noticed when you're driving this 4x4. Goodies include a chrome grille, custom front bumper with Hella off-road lights, fender flares, and a swing-away rear tire carrier designed for the oversized rubber. The net effect is that this is a hardcore backpack that you can drive. Anywhere.
The interior got a thorough makeover during the repaint, including a set of Mastercraft Jeep seats that hold you in place far better than the slippery, flat original buckets when the going gets rough. The entire interior was coated in Rhino-Liner, so it offers the ability to simply hose out the interior after a day of fun in the dirt. A custom center console houses the AM/FM/CD stereo system and it's water resistant, so no worries when you're out having fun in the wild. All the original gauges are fully functional, and all the rubber is new, so it's surprisingly devoid of squeaks and rattles. New roll bar padding is always nice for hitting the rough, and a bikini top offers a modicum of protection without diluting the open-air experience.
A fresh 258 cubic inch inline-six crate motor was installed a few years ago and still runs beautifully with an estimated 20,000 miles since it was fitted. Torquey and robust, this is the engine you want pulling through the worst slop Mother Nature can throw at you. Virtually bulletproof, it also has the low-end torque you need and gentle throttle tip-in makes it easy to feel your way through the slippery stuff. The 4-speed manual was rebuilt less than 1000 miles ago, and feeds the stock 2-speed transfer case and seriously beefy Dana 44 axles at both ends. 4.10 gears give it rock-crawling stability, but thanks to the oversized tires, it can cruise relatively easily at highway speeds in high range. Four-wheel discs and stout Bilstein shocks are additional hardware bonuses, and the driveshaft was built by off-roading legend Tom Woods. The suspension also features a Jeep YJ spring over lift with Blue Torch Fab integrated bumper brackets. 15-inch American Racing wheels look flashy and wear giant 35x12.50x15 BFGoodrich off-road tires.
