In the '50s, if you were at the top of your game, you drove a Cadillac like this '56 Coupe DeVille. All the heavy hitters, from Sinatra to Elvis, had cars like this, and you could see them lined up in front of the big hotels in Vegas and cruising the streets of Manhattan.
However, restoring a '50s Cadillac is not for the faint of heart (or wallet!). Fortunately, super-solid cars like this are out there, making the job a lot easier. With zero rust and no signs of accident damage, this lovely Coupe DeVille has been lovingly restored in period-correct colors that are sophisticated without resorting to the pink Cadillac cliché. There's an awful lot of steel to smooth and sand, but thanks to experts working long hours, it's straight and beautifully finished. To get all this chrome into shape probably cost more than a year at Harvard, but the end result is enough automotive jewelry to make grown men fall in love. Both the wrap-around windshield and rear window remain in excellent condition, and those unique P-51 inspired tailfins with their integrated brake lights had not yet grown to their peak proportions, giving this Cadillac beautiful lines from front to rear.
In the '50s, GM stylists were given permission to take chances, and the results showed up in their top-of-the-line models as brilliant patterns and space-age instrument panels. The seats in this DeVille are a lovely brocade fabric that is totally '50s cool. The door panels remain in good condition, and you'll note that this Coupe DeVille is loaded with options like power windows, a power front seat, power steering, and power brakes. The instrument panel is substantial and beautifully finished in stainless steel and chrome, giving you the impression that you were at the helm of something truly substantial. This one also carries its original AM radio with Wonderbar signal-seeking function. The trunk has been recently reupholstered as well in matching tan fabric that also includes a special storage bag for the spare tire.
By 1956, Cadillac's revolutionary OHV V8 engine had been punched out to 365 cubic inches, making it one of the most powerful engines in America. Easily able to move the biggest limousines, it makes the Coupe DeVille feel downright sprightly, and offers a wonderful muted V8 hum that suggests precision machinery at work. Dressed in Cadillac Blue, it looks correct , including the original air cleaner and accessories, and the inner fenders and firewall tell you just how clean this car really is. A Hydramatic automatic is the sole gearbox available, but it's a willing and reliable partner and shifts beautifully. The floors are solid, the chassis straight, and fresh shocks have been fitted at all four corners to emphasize that traditional Cadillac ride, and you'll discover that there's truly nothing like it. Four L78-15 wide whites have been fitted, and it wears correct hubcaps.
