Vehicle Description
MG saw the writing on the wall, and went out in grand fashion with this 1980 MK4 special edition. Available only on black 1979-80 MGBs, 6668 were built over two years, and today they're the MGB to own. With numerous upgrades over their production line siblings, they represent the end of the line for the classic 2-seat British roadster.
The best thing about a black MG is that it blends well with the rubber front bumper, which was always a love-it-or-hate-it proposition for MG fans. It gives the little roadster a sleek European look, and with the black paint it really works to pull the whole design together. Silver graphics along the rockers offer an MGB callout, and help to streamline the car even more. Details like the large taillight lenses, MG badges, and stainless rub strips are also well preserved, giving the roadster a very inviting look.
European car fans will instantly recognized the textured vinyl used on the seats, which is similar to that used by many manufacturers looking for a comfortable, durable material. As a result, the seats show light use, but no rips or tears, and even for a convertible, there's no discoloration. The door panels are in great shape, augmented by a set of modern speakers, and the carpets are very good, thanks to a set of fitted floor mats. The small-diameter wheel is a sporty 3-spoke design, and the wooden knob of the shifter is an easy reach. All the original Smith's gauges are functional, and a newer AM/FM/CD stereo has been installed. Overhead, a matching black vinyl convertible top looks to be a newer addition, and it seals up better than its ancestors who were stuck with sidecurtains.
Power comes from MG's erstwhile 1798cc inline-four. It starts easily with a sporty chirp from the exhaust, and you'll enjoy running up and down through the sweet-shifting 4-speed manual and listening to the engine note. The engine bay is tidy and shows signs of regular maintenance, and thanks to a booming aftermarket, these are remarkably inexpensive cars to own and operate. On an MGB, rust is your biggest enemy, but this car has apparently lived its entire life in a warm, sunny climate, because it's solid and clean underneath. And as a MK4, it also wears special 5-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in newer blackwall radials.
Delivering driving thrills on a budget was always an MG specialty, and few do it better than the final MK4 roadster. Call today!
