Vehicle Description
For reasons that aren't altogether clear, the Oldsmobile Cutlass continues to be a bargain-priced alternative to the virtually identical Chevelles and GTOs out there. This particularly handsome 1972 Cutlass shows just 16,381 miles, which we believe to be completely authentic, as well as a recent paint job that emphasizes its performance credentials.
Personally, I've always felt the Oldsmobiles were the most handsome of the A-bodies, and in particular, the coupe with its more formal roofline and dramatic fender cut lines. As a low-mileage car, this one still carries all its original sheetmetal, all of which is in exemplary condition. About 6000 miles ago, the car was treated to a complete makeover, with a high-end paint shop handling the duties and delivering a stunning car that looks like it should be a lot more expensive than it is. The gray paint is smooth and deep, with black stripes painted on and buried under the clear for effect. Those stripes emphasize the flared fenders and aggressively styled hood, while reinforcing the idea that Oldsmobiles aren't just family cars. This one has plenty of go to go with the show. All the chrome and trim is intact, including the intricate egg crate grille and multi-piece taillight lenses.
Open the door and you'll discover an absolutely spotless interior with lots of original components. Bucket seats and a console are highly desirable options that work well with the sporty exterior styling, and details like the wood appliques on the door panels and dash remind you that this is a few steps up from a basic Chevy. The gauges show beautiful brushed stainless faces and delicate orange-tipped needles, with a 4-bar steering wheel that's both unusual and ideally suited to the car's mission. The A/C blows ice cold thanks to an R134a conversion, and the original radio has been replaced by a newer AM/FM/cassette head unit that fits in the original slot. Other desirable options include power windows and locks and a very unusual power antenna on the rear deck. The highly original trunk shows zero rust, and includes a full-sized Rally II wheel.
One glance at the gold-painted Rocket 350 will tell you that this is an Oldsmobile engine. Sharing nothing with the other GM engines of the same size, the Olds 350 is well-regarded for its virtually bulletproof construction and high-nickel-content iron block that has proven to be exceptionally durable over the years. It has been recently detailed but has retained its factory-issued equipment, ranging from the air cleaner to the A6 compressor for the A/C system. The chassis is as clean as you'd expect from such a low-mileage car, with a recently rebuilt front end so it tracks straight and rides smoothly. Dual exhaust has been added and gives the car that familiar Oldsmobile growl and four recent 235/60/14 white-letter radials have been fitted to complete the performance-oriented makeover.
