Vehicle Description
Talk about reputation! Even 25 years after they went out of production, the Buick Grand National still carries a big stick on the streets. Unless you're behind the wheel of something like, say, a Viper or 911 Turbo, you probably want to give cars like this '85 Grand National a very wide berth.
The all-black paint job on these cars was intimidating as hell, but when they look this good, it takes it to an entirely new level. Repainted last year using PPG single-stage urethane, this one makes factory black paint look dusty-I mean, it's BLACK. There's also an incredible gloss that the factory never had time to achieve, the result of hours and hours of blocking, sanding, and buffing that surely cost a fortune. This low-mile GN also sports all its original body panels and trim, all of which remains in excellent shape with no signs of UV damage or paint overspray. Clearly never a daily driver, someone has always adored this car and it really shows. There's not much chrome, but the details are still crisp, including proper Grand National badges on the front fenders and the 3.8L SFI TURBO badges on the hood that tell you all you need to know about what's living underneath. Well maybe not, but more on that in a moment.
Buick designers did a pretty darned good job of transforming the luxury-oriented Regal into a sporty performance car. Two-tone gray and black buckets are a big part of that, and they fit the Grand National theme with embroidered headrests that emphasize the turbocharged powerplant. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is nice and fat, and the digital instrument panel is pure 1980s slick. I promise you'll never get tired of looking at it. Aftermarket boost and temperature gauges have been very cleverly integrated into the center console, and there's a new AM/FM/CD stereo head unit in the dash. Everything remains in first-rate condition, including the door panels, carpets (with custom Grand National floor mats), and the dashboard, and while some G-bodies were notorious for sagging headliners, this one remains taut and clean.
In stock form, the 3.8 liter turbo V6 was a brute, but this one is something else entirely. With an upgraded turbo, bigger fuel injectors to match the increased airflow, and an upgraded fuel pump, this one is downright monstrous. The engine itself is plenty stout enough to handle the added pressure, and the years have proven that the 200R4 automatic transmission is equally bulletproof. And there are very, very few cars that can match this particular GN's stab and steer driving style-if there's a hole in traffic, you can be there RIGHT NOW. The rest is pretty stock, including the suspension and brakes, and those gorgeous Grand National wheels give it an industrial look that's absolutely perfect.
