The 1962 Ford Thunderbird Sports Roadsters are among the most prized of all Thunderbirds today. There were only 1427 made in for the 1962 model year, and the Sports Roadster gave the public an option of either enjoying a 2-seat coupe that they had become accustomed to, or a 4-seater that allowed them to enjoy the prestige that the market was moving towards. This is 1 of those 1427 copies, and as you'll see, it's truly a great example.
This factory correct Rangoon Red only has 79,768 actual miles on the clock. It was originally built on the 6th of October 1962 in the Wixom assembly plant. Restored a few years ago in 2008, it's aged quite gracefully. The bodywork is straight, and the prep was clearly done by experts. The gaps are nice (especially for a convertible), and the overall fit and finish is very nice for a car of this size. The paint still presents well today, and the chrome and stainless steel trim are in good condition, as is the fiberglass tonneau cover. Completing the factory look are 7.7 x 14 wide whites, wrapped around original 48 spoke Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels with knock-off spinners. The Hartz black soft convertible top was replaced during the restoration and it fits nicely in the rear cargo hold.
Inside is factory correct black vinyl interior, code#56. As you can see, the interior was one of the areas that received considerable attention during the restoration, and it still looks virtually brand new today. One of the greatest features in the Roadster was the command console - Ford shaped it in a cockpit design to really give the driver the feeling of control without needing to reach very far, and ergonomically, it was decades ahead of its time. You'll also enjoy courtesy lights, swing-a-way steering wheel, power windows & door locks, air conditioning, power steering & brakes, AM radio, front seatbelts, passenger assist bar, and much more. The feeling of luxury extends all the way through this car and it's truly an outstanding combination of performance and luxury that stands as a great example of the quality of product that began to emerge during this era. Once you're inside, you'll want to stay there for quite a while.
What also makes this particular car so rare is the original dealer installed code M 390cid V-8 that produces an amazing 340hp. This car is 1 of only 157 copies made in 1962 featuring the 390 CID with 3x2 barrel carbs, and includes the factory engine dress up kit. As you can see, it completely dressed the engine compartment in chrome, but as I'm sure you'll agree, it's been done with a perfect balance in remaining consistent to the theme of this car - dressy, but not overly done. This rare engine is mated to a 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission and delivers the power through a 3.00:1 gear out back.
