If driving is your thing, this 1953 Chevy 2-door coupe is your car. Expertly built and fully sorted for long-distance events like the Power Tour, it has the reliability and comfort to be ideal for an all-day cruise across the desert, but the looks to make it a stunner on the show field.
Finished in spectacular hot rod red, the '53 Chevy business coupe is actually a fairly rare piece. It retains all of its original character, ranging from the subtle (those creases behind the headlights) to the sublime (those gorgeous rounded rear quarters), and hasn't been chopped or channeled, because honestly, it's hard to improve on this. Paint and bodywork are exemplary, and even for a car that has been driven thousands of miles, it's incredibly clean, straight, and unmarked. It fits together very well, with doors that seal up tightly for quiet cruising with the A/C blasting, and excellent alignment so it looks awesome when it flashes past on the highway. All the original chrome and stainless trim remains in place, too, including the massive grille and bumper, and the cool trim around the side windows. The effect is fantastic.
The interior is a long way from 1953, however, with gorgeous tan leather covering most of the surfaces and filled with modern comfort and convenience items. The buckets were borrowed from a late-model, and wrapped in gorgeous two-tone skins that give it a very upscale look and are about a million times more comfortable than the original bench. A custom-fabricated center console not only gives you a place to put your elbow, but also some handy storage. Nicely fitted carpets and custom made door panels give it a very professional look inside. But style matters, which is why the original Chevy dashboard remains, albeit filled with newer Sun gauges in the original panel. Vintage Air A/C and a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system make it easy to drive hundreds of miles without feeling it, and the spacious, fully upholstered trunk lets you take all your gear with you. This is first-class travel.
Since this car was built to cruise, why not choose the most reliable powertrain ever devised by man to power it? A rebuilt 350 with a 4-barrel carburetor delivers exciting performance, great sounds, and will practically run on three cylinders if it has to. To help build horsepower, there are a set of double-hump heads, an Edelbrock carburetor and intake, long-tube headers, and a set of roller rockers to help eke out a few extra ponies. It's nicely detailed, but not over the top, so you won't think twice about hitting the road. The front subframe is from a Camaro, and offers power steering and power disc brakes, and the TH350 feeds a 10-bolt rear with a highway-friendly gearset. Classic polished Torque-Thrusts wear tall Michelin radials, so it rides nice and tracks straight.
