A lot of hobbyists refer to the mid-1970s as the dark days, but in a few corners of the industry, real car guys were still building some pretty nice hardware. Throughout the '70s, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was consistently a best seller, and this 1975 Cutlass Supreme coupe is proof enough that these were extremely stylish cars with capable engines and decent performance. If you haven't driven a '70s Olds Cutlass, you're in for a treat-they aren't wallowy land barges, and they aren't rock-stiff pavement pounders. Instead, they're surprisingly agile with a big car ride that manufacturers just can't seem to duplicate today. There's definitely a reason they remain extremely popular today.
With only 38,004 original miles, this gorgeous Cutlass coupe still rides and drives like the General intended. That's the original color, and the paint is in very good condition, looking even better in person than it does in photos. While light blue may not be everyone's cup of tea, it really works on this big cruiser, especially with the contrasting white vinyl top and black interior to keep it from being too pastel. To my eye, the color is even more striking than bright red or black might be, and the fact that it's so unusual is definitely a bonus. Nicely assembled, those big doors open and close easily without sagging on their hinges or rattling due to decaying weather seals. There's no sign of rust or botched repairs in this car's past, either. The vinyl top is clean and there's no bubbling underneath, further proof that this is a dry, well-maintained coupe with no body issues.
Oldsmobile didn't forget that they were a luxury manufacturer in 1975, and the bucket seat interior of this Cutlass is beautifully appointed. The high-back bucket seats look appropriate for the mileage of the car, and still look comfortable and supportive with no splits or holes. The plush carpet is thick with no discoloration or fading, and the dash is beautifully preserved. In this Cutlass, the luxury is tempered with a nice dose of sportiness, including a full-length center console and deep-set round gauges that remind you that this is a car from the same guys who built the 442. The original and very cool AM/FM/8-track stereo radio still lives in the dash and works properly. Overall, the spectacular condition of this interior suggests that this Olds has led a very easy life.
Power comes from Oldsmobile's own 350 cubic inch V8 topped by a four-barrel carburetor and making 170 horsepower and backed by a recently rebuilt 3-speed automatic transmission. These engines are known to deliver thousands of miles of trouble-free service with minimal care. Due to their low compression ratios and liberal use of cast iron, Olds V-8s tend to last 200,000-plus miles without a whimper. It's also interesting to note that stock cast-iron Olds V-8 cylinder heads of this vintage have a nearly flat, open combustion chamber that not only made the engine fuel efficient, but a relatively clean burner as well. Having lived its entire life in a warm, dry climate, this Olds' engine bay is extremely clean, and shows signs of regular maintenance and a recent freshening. All the original equipment is still intact, from the hose feeding the air cleaner to the original exhaust manifolds. You'll also notice it is equipped with power steering and power brakes for easy handling in the Oldsmobile tradition. Wheels are great-looking Oldsmobile chrome Rallys wearing 225/60/15 Goodyear Eagle GTII radials.
Cars of this vintage don't get much cleaner than this, and of all the GM Colonnade coupes, the Cutlass is by far the most desirable. The color combination is stunning in person, and it's obvious that this one has been extremely well cared for throughout its life. Now 36 years old, this one is welcome at just about any car show where it will undoubtedly find an appreciative audience, especially given its very low mileage.
